Drywall anchor types
The four anchors that cover almost every job, what each holds, and the one question — which way does the load pull? — that decides between them.
The four that cover almost everything
| Anchor | Typical hold (1/2" drywall) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic expansion | 10–25 lb | Small frames, light hooks |
| Self-drilling (threaded) | 25–50 lb | Mirrors, small shelves, towel bars |
| Winged plastic toggle | ~50 lb+ | Heavier shelves, curtain rods |
| Metal toggle / strap toggle | 50–100+ lb | Heavy mirrors, cabinets (in shear) |
| Screw into a stud | 80–100+ lb | TVs, cabinets, heavy shelving |
These are manufacturer planning figures in 1/2-inch board — the real number is on your packaging, and it drops sharply in pull-out and in thinner or damaged drywall.
The question that picks the anchor
Not "how heavy", but "which way does it pull?" A picture hanging flat uses the anchor's strong direction (shear). A floating shelf, a towel bar, a coat hook or a leaning load pulls outward (pull-out), where every anchor is far weaker and the printed rating barely applies. For outward or overhead loads, over-spec the anchor or fix into a stud.
Quick picks
- Under ~10 lb, flat: a plastic expansion anchor or a bare hook.
- 10–50 lb, flat: a self-drilling anchor, matched to the weight.
- Over ~50 lb, or anything pulling outward: a metal toggle rated with margin — or a stud.
- Overhead or safety-critical (grab bars, a TV): a stud, or blocking. Never anchors alone.
Leave margin: treat the rating as the failure point, not the working load. Full method, including the shear-vs-pull-out trap, is in how much weight can drywall hold; to hang a TV specifically see how to hang a TV on drywall.
Questions
What are the main types of drywall anchor?
Four cover almost everything: plastic expansion anchors (light duty, ~10–25 lb), self-drilling threaded anchors (medium, ~25–50 lb), winged plastic toggles (~50 lb+), and metal toggle or strap toggle bolts (50–100+ lb). Above that, or for anything pulling outward or overhead, you fix into a stud instead.
Which drywall anchor holds the most weight?
Metal toggle bolts (and strap/snap toggles) hold the most in drywall — 50 lb and up, some rated over 100 lb in shear. But even these are far weaker in pull-out, so match the anchor to how the load pulls, and move to a stud for heavy or overhead items.
Which anchor for a floating shelf or towel bar?
These pull outward, so they live in the weakest direction for an anchor. Use a toggle rated well above the load, hit a stud where you can, and never rely on a light plastic anchor. A towel bar yanked outward and a shelf loaded at the front both test pull-out, not shear.
How much weight can each anchor really hold?
As a planning guide in 1/2-inch drywall: plastic expansion ~10–25 lb, self-drilling ~25–50 lb, toggles ~50–100+ lb, a screw in a stud ~80–100+ lb. Treat the printed rating as the failure point and halve it for a working load. Full detail: how much weight can drywall hold.
